(sorry for x posting everywhere!)
my fantasy novel, the Shadow Seer, has been published!
For generations prophets have foreseen the birth of the Shadow Seer, the oracle of dark visions and fallen kingdoms. But by the time of Sorron, King of Carnia, their warnings have mostly been forgotten and his name is known only to a handful of scholars.
When Sorron's grandson, Prince Candale, falls deathly ill, the Seer's legends are brought to light once again by his saviour, a witch named Mayrila. She believes that Candale is the fulfillment of those long forgotten prophecies.
She believes that he is the Shadow Seer.

well after a year of nothing, i've been accepted with a new publisher. writer's exchange they're called
and unlike my old poetinal publisher, they've already sent me my work to edit
how they've done it is:
she's gone through it and made changes. I can't see the small ones, but the larger ones are in square brackets with her comments. In some cases it's just, this doesn't sound right, change to this. in other cases it's a rewrite of a whole damn thing!
But there aren't that many, which pleases me, as i guess it means that i haven't made too many mistakes in the general write that now need fixing.
will let you know what happens next :)

I haven't posted here for a long time, but not much has been happening with the novel. The publisher assures me editing will start before xmas, but little chance of it being out by then. :( but this seems to be a common problem with small print companies, even sometimes with bigger ones, so there isn't much i can do. I have printed up some bookmarks, a little preemptive i know, but i thought i should start advertising. Now i just pray that nothing goes hideously wrong, and the publisher doesn't go bust or something, leaving me with 100 bookmarks and no book!
Anyway, i've added a forum to the websitehttp://franjacobs.proboards51.com/index.cgi
which is more general than this, to discuss my novel, when it comes out, already published short stories, and fantasy and writing things in general. So please feel free to join, although you will have to register, that doesn't take long.
Hopefully have some progress news soon, but i guess this is all part of the experience, right? No one ever told me about the waiting around to begin things!

first review of a story of mine. not great, but you know, there was a story there i think she disliked more! :) she said she found it confuzzling, but that's all personal opinion. so yeah, i think i should mention it on my website. i think reviews, even not good ones, show that i am listening to comments, right? besides, she liked the start, that's something! :) (tho i do disagree that it was confuzzling. i really didn't think so, i just didn't want to say what she wanted too soon. but, i wrote it over a year ago (more like 2) and its likely my whole structure would be different now.
and it wasn't the worst story mentioned.

i asked my publisher some questions tonight, just general stuff (you can see them below) and here's their responses.
> 1. How do you feel about me having one chapter on
> my website, and a few other places, to act as promotion
This is fine. I would just request that it be only
one chapter and not a substantial part of the novel.
> 2. How will royalties be paid? is it a check or
Your choice. I default to check, but if you have a
Paypal account, I can do that, too.
> 3. Do i get any free copies of the book?
> 4. Do i get a discount on ordering further copies
> of the book, for resale? For example, i may want to
sell some on amazon.co.uk or order more in for book signings
Yes, 40% off. I am also talking with Ingram about
signing up with their UK partner, so you probably
won't need to mess with Amazon.UK yourself.
> 5. What about sequels? Do i need to submit them
> during a reading period, or does it just depend on
how well the first book sells
During a reading period. I don't base anything off of
sales, only on how good the book itself is. I am a
bit more forgiving on sequels to existing titles, but
there is no guaranteed acceptance for anyone.
> 6. i have a few images that friends have drawn for
> me, a map, and a heraldic image i thought might be
useful for the spine, to act as a logo
Sure, I'd be happy to use them as long as they're
decent. We can discuss that closer to publication.
> 7. Any idea when i will receive the contract?
Hopefully by the end of the month. February has been
awful for me. Can't wait until spring.
so, other than the, not automatically taking the squel, im pretty happy! i get three free copies, a discount on further orders, but MORe importantly for me is the, they are discussing having disturbution in teh uk! as a uk citizen, it did worry me that no one here would be able to get the book, and they would have to import it, so this is a big relief and something im hopeful about!
so fingers x :)
some of you may be interested (i have no idea!) i have put together a cafepress shop, to sell a few items with some of the images people have been drawing for me of my novel/series
The basic thing behind this is, if i can make some cash doing this, i have more cash to promote my novel when it comes out in December.
Thought i would share it with you, in case any of you had seen the art on my website and were interested in items made from it
You never know :)

AM still waiting on my contract, they promised this winter.
BUT a story that introduces one of my main characters, and the world of the Shadow Seer novel, and i guess the entire series, is now out in a Candian Magazinehttp://www.neo-opsis.ca/
It's issue 8. You can buy it online and they ship worldwide. Just thought i would let people know in case they were interested in seeing my style and so on.
I had written this story to act as a sort of prologue, because what happens in it is behind the entire series, BUT it can also act as a spoiler, as one of the characters influences the novel, but the characters in the novel don't know the truth about who she is, but you will if you read the story.
So yeah, it introduces the world, sets up the plot of the novel, to some extent, but can also act as a spoiler
But i thought i would let you know anyway.
It's called Medyna's Choice. :)

my publisher to be, if anyone is interested. december is the date they say it will be released! i would hope it to be sooner than that. sigh.
anyhoo, the first thing i have learnt is, when they read through your novel they make changes as they go! so its a pain for them if you alter it after the fact. which i did. luckily they hadn't gotten very far through it when they decided they wanted it, so hadn't made that many changes, and were ok with me sending them the newer version :)
i should be getting the contract through this winter. will post a copy of that up here when i get it, although all publishers have different terms.

Just wanted to share about how odd this all is!
I've wanted my novel accepted for publication forever. Never thought it would happen (wrote it a few years ago, never sent it off, been editing it since then!) and the first place i send it, takes it. Granted its a small place, not got a tight contract, which scares me a bit, but it will still be published, still be in print, still be available to buy.
and it scares me! The idea that people i don't know about could read my book, write reviews, and maybe even hate it, worries me! the idea that people may LOVE it the way i love other writers' stuff is an odd feeling. And it also feels weird to know that when its in print, i can't change it! I will open it up, see my words written, see that they are bound in paper, and i can't change a damn thing about it. and i have spent a good two years changing things and moving lines. I am also curious about what the cover will be like :) curious to see my characters in picture form.
and yet i still feel all kinda, hmm, so is that it? My life didn't drastically change when it happened, i dunno why i thought it would! Perhaps if it had been a HUGE company, like Torr or something then maybe i would feel different, but at the moment, i just feel the same, but with an odd feeling of, OH MY GOD someone liked it! i was one of 11 chosen! i was, apparantly, a book the editor woman couldn't put down! (she read through the last few things quickly, looking for stuff she couldn't put down, and mine and three others was one like that)
and i also think, well, what if i could have done better! i always feel like that. my changeling story was accepted for publication at the same time, only for ten dollars and i think, maybe it was worth more! am i destined to be like JD from scrubs, and never happy with what i get? I hope not. tho if i am ever happy i gues that is when you stop striving for better things, right? but at the same time, i would like to have good news without the regret of, oh, what if this was a mistake and i should have held up for something better!

well, thought i had better make a post, even tho this is only going to be little!
my novel has been accepted for publication by silver lake publishers. they're small print, both print and e-books (i wouldn't have submitted if it was just ebooks!) they usually have submissions periods, tho the acceptance email said that they won't be doing that next year. my novel was one of 11 accepted, and will be one of the last ones published (as it was one of the last submitted!)
it will only be available on amazon.com and other american online places, BUT the contract is open and i am allowed to seek other publishers, so i will probably look for another one closer to home for the uk side of it :)
am VERY excited! been off line for 8 hellish days, and feared a rejection, but nope! :) been accepted! and my little baby will, in a year, be out there for me to hit people over the head with! :)
am waiting on teh contract, so probably shouldn't have been so quick to go yay! but its just a formality! will put up some details of it when i get it :)

I have you on my Friends List, but I saw your website and I think it looks great! I'm hoping to use one of my Geocities accounts to make a writing website for myself, later on.
Okay, here's a question (or two) for you:
How much research would you say you've done for your writing. Are there pieces where you haven't done any research? What kind of research have you done in the past?
I ask this because a fellow friend of mine (who also is into writing fantasy stories) says she didn't do any research for her latest piece, but another friend of mine says you have to do research for everything you write.
I'm trying to come up with a story idea that I can write without doing research (or a lot of research) for, since I want to make a real attempt at National Novel Writing Month
Loved your stories Midnight Market
and Rules of War
, by the way. Excellent! Keep up the good work! Current Mood: curious
